Requirements depend on your TRICARE plan, beneficiary status, treatment setting, and requested service.
Active duty service members: Nonemergency civilian mental health and substance use disorder care generally requires a referral and authorization. Start with your primary care manager or military treatment facility.
Other beneficiaries: Referral and authorization requirements vary. Check the rules for your specific service before beginning treatment.
Emergency care: Prior authorization is not required for emergency care. Follow TRICARE’s notification requirements if admitted to a hospital.
The treating provider must meet TRICARE’s eligibility requirements. Being TRICARE-authorized and being in network are different statuses, and both can affect your treatment arrangements and costs.
Our admissions team can help review your benefits and coordinate next steps with the appropriate provider or regional contractor.
Costs depend on your plan, beneficiary category, provider status, and treatment.
Some members may have deductibles, copays, or cost-shares. TRICARE also has annual catastrophic caps that apply according to the member’s coverage category.
TRICARE For Life coordinates with Medicare, and payment depends on which programs cover the service and their coordination rules.
Our team can review your benefits and explain estimated costs before treatment begins. Verification does not guarantee authorization or payment.
